Through the vast landscapes and diverse cultures, Sudan’s rich history is steeped in tradition and tainted with political unrest. Patterns to Freedom covers the historical and cultural significance of design and the influence it had in the context of the 2018 Sudanese Revolution, which led to the overthrowing of a brutal dictatorship that held power for over 30 years. Sudan remains a nation of rich cultural heritage and diversity, a land of beauty and resilience, where the past and the present coexist in a vibrant tapestry of art, design and culture. Patterns have been used in Sudan as a form of expression through various mediums like henna, tribal art, graffiti, and other forms. While the Sudanese Revolution continues to be a battle, activists continue to use typographic letters, ornamentation, and craft as an act of solidarity and protest.
