On Queerness & Race in Brazilian Art & Design

Explore the vibrant complexity of Brazil’s cultural landscape, where race, queerness, and creative resistance collide. From colonial-era mythmaking to contemporary cuir artists, these lectures uncover how art and design have challenged dominant narratives and imagined new futures—through figures like Marielle Franco, the Enciclopédia Negra, and the radical legacy of the Manifesto Antropófago.

The (Arab) Queering of Design Practice

Queerness is not a Western invention—it thrives across time and geography. In this class, acclaimed designers Wael Morcos and Marwan Kaabour share how their work reclaims space for SWANA queer narratives. Learn how they not only tell queer stories but queer the design process itself, turning visual language into a site of resistance, joy, and cultural reimagining.

Black Queer Stories in Print: 19th Century to the Harlem Renaissance

Long before “representation” became a buzzword, Black queer lives were already being recorded—sometimes between the lines, sometimes front and center. This session traces powerful moments in print, from the 1830s trial of Mary Jones/Peter Sewally to William Dorsey Swann’s drag balls and Alain Locke’s The New Negro. These aren’t just stories of survival—they’re stories of self-definition, community, and cultural revolution.
